Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Sooronbai Jeenbekov stated on 16 August in Bishkek that development of relations between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan is impossible without removing barriers and restrictions.
Speaking at a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on bilateral cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Uzbekistan, he noted that eight years have passed since the last seventh meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Bilateral Cooperation.
“This is a long enough break. In this regard, Kyrgyzstan warmly accepted the words of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev that the main priority of Uzbekistan’s foreign policy is the Central Asian region. Namely - strengthening and developing relations with neighboring countries. The head of our states gave a powerful impetus to development of bilateral relations during the visit of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Almazbek Atambayev to Samarkand at the end of 2016. To activate cooperation, we need to adopt a roadmap for trade and economic cooperation between the two countries,” Zheenbekov stressed.
Kyrgyz Prime Minister noted importance of resumption of the work of checkpoints on the Kyrgyz-Uzbek state border. In his opinion, this will create conditions for free movement and transit of goods, implementation of joint investment projects, creation of joint Kyrgyz-Uzbek enterprises, logistics centers and processing enterprises.
“Kyrgyzstan is interested in long-term supplies of mineral fertilizers from Uzbekistan, development of air, road and rail services to promote the growth of trade turnover and tourist flows,” the Head of Kyrgyz Government said.
Sioronbai Jeenbekov said that trade turnover between two countries increased by 1.8 times in the first quarter of 2017 as compared to the same period of the previous year.
“We are not going to stop there, there is a huge untapped potential that needs to be fully utilized. We are ready to import from Uzbekistan mineral resources, cotton raw materials, automotive products, medical products and preparations. In turn, the Kyrgyz side has something to export to Uzbekistan. These are food and processing industry products, as well as textiles and others. In this regard, it is necessary to work on removing all barriers and restrictions,” he said.
“In addition to trade and economic cooperation, development of cultural and humanitarian ties between our peoples is of great importance, we have a common history, similar customs and language. These bring our citizens together and impose on us responsibility to intensify cultural and humanitarian cooperation between countries. In this context, we welcome organization of the Days of Uzbek Culture in Kyrgyzstan in October 2017 and are ready to provide maximum assistance in organization of the event at the highest level,” Prime Minister Sooronbai Jeenbekov said.
It should be noted that the meeting discussed issues of bilateral cooperation in the field of trade and economic relations.
