Khorezm Regional Diagnostic Laboratory opened in Urgench

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Khorezm Regional Diagnostic Laboratory was opened in Urgench. The laboratory was opened with the support of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) of the United States Department of Defense.
US Ambassador to Uzbekistan Pamela Spratlen took part in the opening ceremony of new laboratory.
She said that the project, which was launched last year, is another example, what two states can make in cooperation with each other.
Envoy noted that the project launch new stage of partnership between Ministry of Agriculture and Water Management and DTRA. This new stage will be directed at improving cooperation in science, joint research and continuing training in management of biologic threats and diseases supervision.
She stated that such regional diagnostic laboratories play important role in strengthening supervision over diseases. She underlined importance of training specialists and experts in this sphere.
Spratlen said that the sides could combat infectious diseases more efficiently by sharing resources and skills. She added that all should direct their efforts to prevent or slow down spread of infectious diseases via strengthening national opportunities and contributing via sharing experience and resources.
It is worth to mention that two similar laboratories were opened in Andijan and Ferghana in 2011 at financial assistance of DTRA. Laboratories are equipped with modern equipment, which can help to determine dangerous micro-organisms and prevent epidemics.
During the visit to Khorezm region, the US Ambassador met with the Region’s Hokim Pulat Bobojonov, visited the regional TB dispensary - a recipient of USAID assistance.
She also delivered remarks to the students of the Urgench State University, paid a visit to the Embassy’s Access English language program, and took advantage of her time in the city to see the sights with alumni of the Embassy’s educational programs.
In Khiva, the Ambassador toured the Tosh-Khovli site located in the Itchan Qala Museum Reserve- a potential site for a future project supported by the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation.
