Helen Clark: Reforms in Uzbekistan are successful

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Deputy Secretary-General of the UN and UNDP Administrator Helen Clark paid a visit to Uzbekistan on 15-20 October 2014.
After the visit and negotiations, Helen Clark gave an interview to Jahon news agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan.
She said that this is not her first visit to Uzbekistan. She recalled that she visited Uzbekistan about 3.5 years ago.
She underlined that she visited on the eve of the important international conference “Development of cooperation in the Aral Sea Basin to mitigate consequences of envivonmental catastrophe”, which will be held in Urgench in late October 2014.
Helen Clarks said that she will personally assist in attracting attention of international community to problems of ecologic catastrophe in Aral Sea. Director of the UNDP regional bureau for Eastern Europe and CIS Ceyhan Sultanoglu will participate at the forum on the behalf of the UNDP, she said. Clark noted that the UNDP wants to expand cooperation with Uzbekistan on this issue.
UNDP Administrator underlined that there are many positive changes in Uzbekistan and results of the reforms can be seen. She underlined that after her last visit, the UNDP determined several aspects and directions, in which the organization cold assist to Uzbekistan. She noted that it is pleasant that these reforms are conducted successfully.
“After my last visit to Uzbekistan, I raised issue of assisting the Aral Sea Basin during the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, including supporting human development and human security,” she said. UNDP chief noted that the UNDP and the Government of Uzbekistan actively work on problem related to effective management of water resources in Aral Sea Basin and preventing soil degradation.
She said that the UNDP and Uzbekistan carried out great joint work on such directions and public administration, investment policy, adoption of new tax code, introduction of e-government. She noted that the project, implemented in cooperation with Supreme Court of Uzbekistan, on introduction of electronic legal procedures and electronic document flow.
UNDP within programme Vision 2030 can offer concrete steps on lifting Uzbekistan to level of industrially developed countries, increasing income per capita. She noted that early Uzbekistan’s economy depended on activities of several enterprises and to some extent on cotton sector, now there is serious intention to diversify economic sphere. This, naturally, positively reflects on strengthening and growth of financial-economic prosperity of the country.
She said that it is worth to underline currently Uzbekistan is in important stage of its development. In 2015, Uzbekistan and UNDP will present a report on results of carried out work on implementation of the UN Millennium Goals. Clark said that it is important report, as based on its conclusions, the General Assembly will develop further cooperation strategy with Uzbekistan on achieving new goals.
