Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On the last day of her visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan UNDP Administrator Ms. Helen Clark made a key-note presentation to students and professors at Tashkent’s University of World Economy and Diplomacy.
Her speech showed her appreciation of Uzbekistan’s continued commitment to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by the end of 2015. It also highlighted the need for continued collaboration and cooperation, in order to guarantee the nation’s positive human development trends persist into the post-2015 era.
Ms. Clark’s speech overviewed achievements made towards MDGs both on a global scale and within Uzbekistan, and detailed the on-going efforts being made in defining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the coming decades. Substantial gains have been made towards achieving the MDGs worldwide, Ms. Clark said, but these advances are often uneven in the particular cases of poverty, maternal mortality, sexual and reproductive health, and gender equality and empowerment of women.
To make sure both these goals and the following SDGs are achieved on a global scale, Ms. Clark underlined the need for strong leadership, ownership and drive on national levels, sufficient funding, government engagement and effective global partnership, in making sure the goals are achieved on time.
Putting focus on the Republic of Uzbekistan, Ms. Clark commended the significant advancements made towards achieving the MDGs, and reiterated UNDP’s commitment to making sure human development remains a priority in coming decades. Strong progress has been made in economic growth and the implementation of national programmes in social sectors, including education and health. While challenges remain in terms of MDGs 5 and 6, Ms. Clark continued, UNDP is dedicated to working with national partners and fellow UN agencies in placing the goals within reach.
Ms. Clark also reflected on the global process to decide on what the post-2015 goals should be, which has involved global-level conferences and public dialogue, including a consultation on water-related issues held in Uzbekistan in March 2013. She commended the Government’s development of national MDG targets, and proposed that similarly-adapted SDG goals could be established.
Lastly, Ms. Clark thanked the Government of Uzbekistan, national and international partners, and the people of Uzbekistan for their work with UNDP in the past 20 years, a greatly appreciated partnership, and the joint commitments for coming years.
UNDP Administration Ms. Helen Clark’s speech at Tashkent’s University of World Economy and Diplomacy concluded an extensive visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan. The visit included tours of key project sites, of important cultural and historic locations, and meetings with key figures including the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan H.E. Mr. Islam Karimov.
