Tashkent hosts conference on combating human trafficking

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Central Council of People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan and its faction at the Legislative Chamber organized a national conference titled “Participation of state and NGOs in combating human trafficking” on 25 July.
The event was organized in cooperation General Prosecutor’s Office of Uzbekistan, Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, Ministry of Healthcare, National Center for human rights of Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan Women’s Committee, Mahalla Foundation and Kamolot Youth Public Movement.
The MPs of the Legislative Chamber, representatives of law enforcement bodies, state institutions, NGOs and others took part in the event.
The conference was aimed at discussing measures, adopted in Uzbekistan in fighting human trafficking, agreements, signed with foreign states of combating human trafficking, explaining goals of the law “On combating human trafficking”, participation of mahallas, NGOs and state bodies in this process, etc.
It was underlined that human trafficking is one of global problems now. According to UN, annually about 2.8 million people are becoming victims of the crime, about 80% of them are women and children.
Unemployment and low level of legal knowledge are main reasons for human trafficking. People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan (PDPU) developed a plan of events dedicated to fighting human trafficking within observation of “International Day of Combating Human Trafficking, marked on 30 July.
In April-July, the events were held in all regions of Uzbekistan, which attracted all layers of population, including youth. During the events, the participants were warned about threat of human trafficking, alcoholism, drug addiction, religious extremism, etc. Overall 47 roundtables were held and 4,031 people participated in the events.
At the national conference, the participants discussed efficient ways of fighting human trafficking and transnational crime, cooperation among the bodies and implementation of international documents on human rights.
The participants also considered solving existing problems of people, including youth, to prevent human trafficking.
